Peggy Jean Edwards Butts

Peggy Jean Edwards Butts went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.

She was born to Ira Edwin Edwards and Julia Lola Wingfield Edwards on September 20, 1931, in Smackover, Arkansas.

After graduating from Baylor University in Waco, Texas in, 1952, Peggy began her long and rewarding career in education as an elementary teacher in Dumas, Texas.

She married Richard P. Butts on June 4,1954. Peggy also received her Masters of Education degree from East Texas State University Commerce in 1983. Not only was she an exemplary wife, mother, daughter, and sister, but Peggy also brought wisdom and insight to thousands of young people during her award-winning years in education where she taught in Texhoma, Texas; El Paso, Texas; Guymon, Oklahoma; Mabank, Texas; and served as assistant superintendent/curriculum director then elementary school principal in Kemp, Texas. Moving to Charles Town, West Virginia in 1993, she continued teaching twelfth grade English and retired from Martinsburg High School in 2014. Included in her many honors and awards, she was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternity of Educators, named Caring Educator by Berkeley County Business-Education Partnership, Inc. of 2005, and was named to the Cambridge Who’s Who as the 2007 Professional in secondary education.   Peggy was preceded in death by her mother and father; a sister, Sue Edwards Madera, and most recently her loving husband of 62 years, Richard P. Butts, Jr.

She is survived by three sons Tim Butts and wife Kathryn, of Welcome, Maryland, Herb Butts and wife Libby of Bowie, Maryland,

Mike Butts and wife Dana of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; grandchildren, Stormy Butts, Summer Butts Fernandez, Lane Butts, and Maria Rivera; five great grandchildren; her sister Teresa E. Edwards of Carthage, Texas, a niece and nephew, and numerous friends and relatives.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2016 at Zion Episcopal Church, 301 East Congress Street, Charles Town, WV  25414, with the Rev. Frank S. Coe officiating.

Interment will be at Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eackles- Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry/Charles Town.
