About
Zion Episcopal Church is a family-friendly church located in the quaint little town of Charles Town, WV. We’re located about 90 minutes west of Washington DC in the historic Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
We are an Historic Church
We have been worshipping here for over 190 years. The main body of our Church was built in 1815. Our churchyard contains many historic graves. A History of our Church is available in the vestibule.
We are an Episcopal Church…
a branch of the world-wide Anglican Communion of Christian Churches. We consider ourselves both Catholic and Protestant. We have a formal style of worship.
Our Mission
The mission of Zion Episcopal Church is to strengthen faith; proclaim the Gospel; educate, minister, and encourage; and uphold the rich traditions of The Episcopal Church. This is accomplished through community outreach, liturgy and music, healing ministries, education, and fellowship.
Helpful Hints
If you are not accustomed to worship in the Episcopal Church, we’ve put together these hints to help.
- Individual Hearing Assistance Devices are available at the entrance. An usher will be glad to provide you with one and show you how to use it.
- The Book of Common Prayer is the red book with the cross on the front. The page numbers in the bulletins refer to this book with the prefix “BCP.”
- The Hymnal contains the music for each service. References with an “S” refer to chants found in the front of the Hymnal. The plain numbers are from the main body of the book.
- Each bulletin has the lessons and Psalms for the day.
Receiving Communion
All baptized people are welcome to receive Communion. The ushers will let you know when it is your time to come forward for communion. To receive the Bread, place one hand over the other - palm open and lifted - for the clergy to place it in your palm. To receive the Cup, use your right hand to assist in guiding the wine to your lips. If you wish to receive by intinction (dipping) you may dip the bread in the wine. If you wish to receive the Bread only, you may leave the altar rail after receiving the Bread. Additionally, if you wish to receive a blessing instead of communion, approach the altar rail and cross your arms over your chest.
